CALHAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WINS COLORADO LOTTERY STARBURST AWARD FOR THE CALHAN PLAYGROUND PROJECT
September 20, 2011
The Colorado Lottery has awarded a 2011 Starburst Community Award to Calhan Elementary School for using Lottery dollars to complete the “STEP-UP” playground project. The “Students, Teams, Educators, Parents – United Playground” project crated a new playground to replace the old, unsafe playground that had equipment that was more than 50 years old. Calhan Elementary School utilized a Lottery-funded Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant of $200,000 to help with the construction of the playground.
“Lottery dollars were the catapulting agent allowing the STEP-UP project to grow from a small school-paid refurbishment of equipment to a project that included comprehensive ADA compliant equipment and amenities, upgraded surfacing and a multi-purpose artificial turf field with a retaining wall, said Christine Fischer, project manager of STEP-UP. “The final project scope would never have been possible without the support of lottery dollars.”
