BUENA VISTA COUNTY WOMAN GETS $100,000 AFTER WORK SURPRISE
January 11, 2012
A Buena Vista County woman stopped on her way home from work to scratch her "Holiday Countdown" ticket and couldn't believe her eyes when she saw she'd won a top prize of $100,000.
Tammy Huseman, 46, had purchased the ticket earlier that day while she was at Lake View Foods, 223 Main St. in Lake View picking up a few things for work. She waited until she stopped at a different convenience store after work to scratch it.
"I started scratching them off and I just looked at it and was like, 'Oh no. No way,'" Huseman said.
Huseman went into the convenience store to have her ticket validated.
"[The clerk] said, 'Oh my gosh. You just won a hundred thousand dollars!'" Huseman said.
Huseman immediately called her husband, Darwin, to tell him the news.
"He of course didn't believe me," she said. "So I stopped at my sister's work and she was just freaking out."
Huseman spent the remainder of the evening telling her seven siblings and two children about the win.
"They're all excited," she said.
Huseman said the town of Newell, where she lives, suffered a tornado in April, which took the roof from her home and destroyed a barn on their property, so she plans to use some of her winnings for repairs.
"This is just really going to help out," she said.
Huseman, who is the dietary manager for Black Hawk Care Center in Lake View, claimed her prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Storm Lake.
