ALGONA MAN EXPECTS $50 PRIZE, FINDS $50,000 PRIZE INSTEAD
January 5, 2012
When an Algona man saw he'd matched a winning number on his "Holiday Wishes" instant-scratch ticket, he was expecting to uncover a $50 prize, but found a $50,000 prize instead.
Darrin Schealler, 43, said he hadn't even considered that he could be a top-prize winner and was shocked at what he saw.
"I never thought it'd be fifty thousand," Schealler said. "I actually had to call my girlfriend in to verify the ticket."
Schealler said his mind immediately filled with thoughts of how he could use his winnings, and his girlfriend was excited as well.
"My folks told me I ought to hide it until I turned it in," Schealler said with a laugh.
Schealler said he plans to use some of his winnings to pay bills and has thoughts of taking a vacation as well.
"We'll just have to wait and see," he said.
Schealler claimed his prize Dec. 28 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City. He purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 1500 Hwy. 169 N. in Algona.
