$10,000 POWERBALL PRIZE CLAIMED 1 MONTH BEFORE IT EXPIRED
December 7, 2011
A $10,000 winning PowerBall ticket from the January 5, 2011, drawing was just claimed. The winner was a woman from Warwick who has known she had a winning ticket but decided to wait to claim it until now so she can put the money towards Christmas gifts for her three children and three grandchildren. She also plans to use some of the winnings for bills. The winner joked that she talks a lot, but was miraculously able to keep her big win a secret for the past 11 months.
Royal Liquors on Pontiac Avenue in Providence sold the winning ticket. Winners have one year from the date of the drawing to claim their prize, so this ticket would have expired on January 5, 2012 if the winner didn't come forward.
The ticket matched four numbers and the PowerBall number. The standard payout for this type of win is $10,000. The winner did not purchase the Power Play feature for an additional dollar on the wager. If the player had opted for Power Play, the $10,000 prize would have been multiplied by 5, the Power Play number for that draw, to equal $50,000.
