$1 MILLION DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA BLACK TICKET WINNER CLAIMS PRIZE
June 1, 2011
Washington, D.C. – Sleepless in Rockville is how you can describe Mr. Zheng of Rockville, Maryland because since January 2011, Zheng has known that he’s the D.C. Lottery’s newest millionaire! He won $1 million with the D.C. Lottery’s District of Columbia Black instant scratch ticket game.
In late January, Zheng stopped by Rodman’s Drugs, 5100 Wisconsin Avenue, N.W. to pick up a few things and while at the cash register noticed the Black ticket. He bought one of the $20 tickets and scratched it in the car.
Much to his surprise, he instantly realized that he had won the top prize of $1 million.
“I couldn’t believe it! I took it home. I couldn’t sleep. I just kept thinking that it wasn’t true.” Unsure of what to do with his ticket, he said, “I put it up with my passport. I didn’t know where to put it.”
Zheng told his wife about the win, and they decided to talk to financial planners and an attorney before claiming the prize. For the past two months, only Zheng and his wife knew about the win. Then, he wanted someone to accompany him to the D.C. Lottery’s Claim Center at 2000 14th Street, N.W. in the Frank D. Reeves Municipal Center to collect his prize. So, he told one other person, a very close friend who shared in the excitement of Zheng winning $1 million.
What’s he going to do with his windfall? Zheng said he is considering going on a vacation this summer.
“The D.C. Lottery congratulates Mr. Zheng and his family on his win. We have been anxiously waiting for a $1 million Black ticket winner to come forward,” said Buddy Roogow, executive director of the D.C. Lottery. “This is the D.C. Lottery first one million dollar scratcher, and it offers the best odds of winning $1 million in the region. Now that we have our first $1 million winner, we hope that the second winner comes in soon.
